Tame your Internet Superpowers – What’s happening on the Internet and why you must care

View larger: Title slide in chalk handwriting on a blackboard: “Tame your internet superpowers! Per Axbom”.
  • View larger: Slide: My everyday life: A chalkboard list: thousands listen to me every day; my own support organisation in China; I program the VCR when I’m on the bus; I can see where my friends and family are on a map, right now; free, instant dialogue with politicians; I can answer any question in minutes; my own magazine with free, global distribution; I can walk down the street and see through walls; every week I watch TV with strangers; I loan 25 dollars to strangers in Liberia.
  • View larger: Slide: Superpowers: Chalk handwriting: “Sometimes I feel like I have superpowers.”
  • View larger: Slide: What humans can do: Chalk handwriting: “It’s about what humans can do with technology…” – following “It’s not about what technology can do for humans…”
  • View larger: Slide: Engaged humans: Chalk handwriting: “Companies are confusing enthusiastic, engaged humans with acts of crime.”
  • View larger: Slide: Steal this presentation: The last slide: “If you wish to steal from me you can start with this presentation. Find it here: axbom.se/superpowers. Just remember to share with other thieves. Sooner or later we will all learn something.” A copyleft symbol: “copyleft – all rights reversed”.

A talk on 28 October 2010 at IVA’s Royal Technology Forum “Innovative ICT – Networking in the Baltic region”, in the session on ICT and new media: the everyday superpowers the internet gives us – and the gap between people who have them and people who don’t.

  • The opening: ten things I could do every day – thousands listening to me, my own support organisation in China, seeing where my friends are on a map right now, instant dialogue with politicians, lending 25 dollars to strangers in Liberia. “This is my everyday life. Sometimes I feel like I have superpowers. But there is a gap.”
  • Skeptics have the wrong outset: a century of confident predictions that the telephone, the car, cinema, radio and television would never catch on. It’s not about what technology can do for humans – it’s about what humans can do with technology.
  • Examples from Sugata Mitra’s hole-in-the-wall experiment and One Laptop per Child to Ushahidi, mobile money transfers, “United Breaks Guitars” and the Obama campaign – and for companies: “Companies are confusing enthusiastic, engaged humans with acts of crime.”
  • Among the other speakers: Ene Ergma, President of the Estonian Parliament, and Cecilia Magnusson Sjöberg, professor of law and informatics at Stockholm University.
  • The last slide invited the audience to steal the presentation: “copyleft – all rights reversed”.
