Mostly Harmless: Design for digital with a conscience

  • View larger: Slide: Title slide: “Mostly Harmless – Design for digital with a conscience”, with the short link axbom.eu/feirapdmanaus.
  • View larger: Slide: The Mercator projection: The familiar world map in the Mercator projection – the starting point for asking how much we can trust the maps we use.
  • View larger: Slide: Conversion is not care: “A higher conversion rate is not equivalent to ‘better for the person’.”
  • View larger: Slide: Doing the right thing: A grid of what we do and how we do it: doing the right or wrong thing, the right or wrong way – with “doing the wrong thing the right way” highlighted.
  • View larger: Slide: Why we make bad decisions: Five reasons: self-awareness, time, resilience, understanding and health.
  • View larger: Slide: Framing the problem: “How you frame the problem may indicate if you are human-centric or organization-centric”: “We must stop people from abandoning their shopping cart” versus “We must assist people in making a relevant purchase-decision”.

A talk at the first Feira do Polo Digital de Manaus in November 2018, in the middle of the Amazon rainforest: on digital ethics, and why we must re-evaluate the maps we are using if we want to reach the destination we want.

  • Maps as a metaphor: from the Mercator projection to the maps and tools we trust in design – how much do they distort?
  • Bias, machine bias and “gentle nudges” that aren't so gentle when everyone is pushing you. A higher conversion rate is not the same as better for the person.
  • Why we keep doing the wrong thing the right way – and why we make bad decisions: self-awareness, time, resilience, understanding and health.
  • Framing as a choice between human-centric and organization-centric, and a call to measure and evaluate how people are harmed by our solutions.
  • During the same visit I also ran a small internal workshop at Samsung Digital in Manaus.
