Human-AI Interaction

View larger: Diagram: Human-AI Interaction. Per Axbom, version 1, March 2023, axbom.com/aicom, CC BY-SA. A flow from left to right. An operator’s head, labeled expectations, ability, context, points to “question / input” (intent, code, expression), which points to the “computational model”, sometimes also “language model” (“black box”, interpretation, calculation). The model points to “answer / output” (computed response, code, expression; manufacturer’s intent), which points to a second operator’s head (decoding, experience, regulation) and on to “action”. Below the model, connected both ways, is the “information store”: has been “trained” on, will be trained on, used in calculations; labeled bias, errors, constraints. The input also feeds the information store. Two loops lead back from the second operator: “feedback” to the information store, and “adjust / expand / undo” to the first operator.

A communication model for human-AI interaction: what shapes the input from a person, the output from the computer, and what the person then does with it. Useful in implementation planning, design decisions, communication and training. The diagram is free to download as PDF or PNG, and to use under CC BY-SA.

  • Follows an interaction from left to right: the operator’s expectations, ability and context, the question or input, the computational model, the answer, and the action it leads to.
  • The computational model is a “black box” that calculates the most probable answer, not the truth: a language model, not a knowledge model.
  • Shows the information store the model was trained on, with its bias, errors and constraints, and the feedback loops where the operator adjusts, expands or undoes.
  • Every part comes with questions for the team, such as “How do we help the operator phrase their intent?”
  • Formerly called Communication Model for AI-Powered Chatbots (renamed in 2025).
